About The Bhagavad-Gita Project

VASA (Vedic Academy of Sciences & Arts) and Kavindra Rishi / Jeffrey Armstrong will soon release a new translation of the Bhagavad-Gita that has been in progress for the past nine years.

WHY did it take so long?

The biggest challenge to translating Sanskrit concepts into English has not been addressed by previous translators of the Gita, namely, the English language was constructed in the historical context of the Christian religion. Therefore most of the English words that are used to convey ideas about Divine Reality are influenced by and present a Christian world-view. Words like God, sin, lord, many gods, soul, heaven and hell etc. are constructs of the Christian religion that do not correctly convey Vedic concepts. They are not synonyms for the Sanskrit words whose meanings are being presented in the Bhagavad Gita.

In this new translation, Kavindra Rishi solves these cultural and linguistic translation problems and thereby takes the Gita to a much higher and more refined level of clarity. In addition, his rendering of the text is without lengthy or sectarian commentaries. The Gita’s timeless message has been carefully translated for all to consider, irrespective of their religion, lineage or intellectual background. This is an important step for clarifying the universal Sanatana Dharma meanings of the Gita and to making the message of its verses accessible and understandable to all, in clear modern English.

While the Gita appears to be a war story, it is in fact a love story – the story of Love’s struggle to exist in this complex world. The Bhagavad-Gita is the fascinating account of a unique conversation that took place 5,000 years ago, on a battlefield, between the Supreme Lord Krishna and his friend Arjuna. The conversation they have is no less relevant today than 5,000 years ago as it reveals the answers to life’s most profound spiritual questions of all time. What is the meaning of life, the purpose of our existence and does love exist eternally
The Bhagavad-Gita is the most famous of all the sacred texts of India – a part of the larger body of the Vedic texts. In India, each lineage presents the Vedic knowledge from its own unique perspective with emphasis on those things which explain the texts as revealed to their most advanced teachers. This rendering comes from a lineage called Dvaita or 'Distinctive Individualism'. Historically it goes back through the Gaudiya tradition of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in West Bengal, India in the 15th century and before that traces itself to a great 13th Century (1238-1317) teacher named Madhvacarya. Before this, the lineage traces itself back to the time of Lord Shri Krishna Himself, 5,000 years ago.
Simply put, 'Distinctive Individualism' teaches us that we are all eternal individual souls whose distinctive individuality continues in the future under all circumstances. This means that while it is true that we are all part of one great reality called Brahman, we also have always existed and always will exist as distinctive individuals. In other words, we are eternal beings who are visiting this world. This world is also real and even though it is temporary; the beauty it displays before us is a reflection of things that are also eternal and real.
Finally, the Supreme Reality and Being who is behind and within all of this existence, is also a Person whom we resemble. That Supreme Person, although in one sense all-powerful, is at the same time all-loving and therefore capable of the same kinds of loving intimacy we experience as humans. In fact, the English word supreme is derived from two Sanskrit words: the prefix 'su' which means a thousand times better and 'prema' which indicates the highest state of ecstatic loving intimacy. As the Supreme Person, Lord Shri Krishna is the personification of the highest state of Divine love.
