TOPIC: Yogic Solutions to Life's Chaos

Join Jeffrey Armstrong | Kavindra Rishi as he explains the three gunas and yogic secrets we can use to minimize the chaos in our lives and increase the harmony and balance, while keeping our eye on the ultimate state of moksha – liberation – which is beyond the gunas altogether.

The Vedas teach that there are three gunas – dynamic and unstable states or combinations of matter: sattva, rajas, and tamas. The material world, our bodies included, has a predisposition to one of these gunas and is always shifting and changing among them.

Our atma – our eternal individual self – is beyond the gunas. However, since in the material world we are overwhelmed to various degrees by matter, it is critical to understand and discern the gunas so that we can always keep evolving to a higher and higher state of awareness. Our goal should be to stay in the sattvic – balanced – guna as much as possible and avoid the tamas – chaos – toward which matter naturally devolves.

Beyond that, since there is no English vocabulary or even mental concept or construct that describes what the atma is – the unique, eternal, indivisible, invisible and inextinguishable individual – we remain confused, and the chaos and unconsciousness of the material world rules our life. The study and practice of Samkhya yoga – “neti neti, not this not that” tells us what we are not and this points us in the direction of who we are.
