Mysteries of Our Five Yogic Bodies

The ultimate goal of yoga is to be reinstated in our identity as an immortal being. We do this initially through the scientific process of sankhya-buddhi yoga – understanding all the various components of our material body which are not us through the process of “neti neti, na iti na iti – not this not that.” We are not any of the subtle or gross matter of our body; rather, aham brahmasmi – I am a being of Brahman. I am an atma temporarily covered in gu or prakriti, and through yoga undo the vrittis – all the twistedness of matter on our self.

As human beings, our physical body is constituted of the 5 gross material elements and 3 less dense yet still material elements. It is covered in 5 koshas – sheaths, layers, or bodies, all material, each one less dense than the other. The 5 elements are organized in various ways according to our karmas from previous lives to create our dosha, one of 9 basic material inclinations which is set at birth and can be slightly modified but not fundamentally changed. Influencing our physical body and all our thoughts and actions are the three gunas, the ever-changing dynamic states of matter which bring us closer to or farther away from a state of consciousness and light. And our dasendriyas – ten senses – are constantly chasing after the objects of our senses.

Eventually we understand that we have been focused on the material aspects of life and chasing the temporary, reflected beauty within matter, while what we really want is an eternal relationship with beauty and its eternal source. Or, we have been so heartbroken by not getting the beauty or by only getting it temporarily that we throw it away or say it does not exist, it’s not real. In truth, we can just reverse our focus, turn around and find the beauty within, with Paramatma who has been sitting in our hearts waiting for us the whole time. We do not have to renounce matter or action within matter. We can continue doing all we do while giving up attachment to the outcome and surrendering it to Bhagavan.
